Google has recognised the Palestinians' upgraded UN status by rebranding a local version of its website.

"Palestine" has replaced the words "Palestinian Terrorities" beneath the company's logo on Google.ps, six months after the UN General Assembly made it a non-member observer state.

The change went into effect on May 1.

Nathan Tyler, a spokesman for Google, said: "We're changing the name 'Palestinian Territories' to 'Palestine' across our products.

"We consult a number of sources and authorities when naming countries. In this case, we are following the lead of the UN ... and other international organisations."

Palestine's elevated status was agreed in November, after UN member states approved the move by 138 votes to nine.

Britain was among 41 countries which abstained.

Palestinian authorities have since begun to use the "State of Palestine" in diplomatic correspondence and issued official stamps for the purpose.

Yigal Palmor, a spokesman for the Israeli foreign ministry, questioned Google's decision.

"This change raises questions about the reasons behind this surprising involvement of what is basically a private internet company in international politics - and on the controversial side," he said.

The UN vote gives the Palestinians access to a range of international institutions, including potentially the International Criminal Court, and raises their international profile after years of stalled peace talks with Israel.
